What is Unclaimed Property?
Unclaimed Property consists of money and other personal assets that are considered lost or abandoned when an owner cannot be located after a specified period of time. For credit unions, the period is 36 months. It includes deposit accounts such as savings, checking, certificates, etc.
How Property Becomes Abandoned or Unclaimed
You may have unclaimed accounts as a result of some of the following:
-
If you moved and did not update your address with the credit union
-
If you overpaid a credit card bill but did not use the credit.
-
If you experienced an address change assigned to you due to E911, but you did not move
-
If you received a check you did not cash
How to Prevent Property from Becoming Abandoned or Unclaimed
-
Keep a record of all accounts
-
Prepare a check list of all accounts to be notified when you change your address.
-
Cash all checks promptly upon receipt, no matter how small.
